So it’s been a while… Oh well, it’s almost Christmas!

I have no idea where my head has been lately, but I woke up this morning and realized it’s the 11th of December and I hadn’t started the count down on the blog! Now, granted I haven’t posted anything in ages since the Halloween rush took off (in the middle of which I was moving XD) so that might have a little something to do with it, but still that is no excuse. So I am cramming the first 11 Days of our countdown into one uber post! At the same time I am going to be trying out a new format. Hopefully this will allow me to do more of these since the previous format had become simply too time consuming for me to keep up.

Brace yourself now, this is a LONG post.

DAY 1

SANTA’S AIR SHIP

I adore steam punk. I love the look, I love the genre, I love the costumes! It’s whimsical and not all at once.

Speaking of steam punk, got some book suggestions for you guys:

Soulless. Changeless, and Blameless of the Parasol Protectorate by Gail Carriger

The first book, Soulless is available in fullcast audiobook form on Audible and the first chapter of Soulless is available in audio for free at various podcasts such as the Metamor City Podcast and Literary Abmoniations (J.D. Sawyers uber feed).

The Gearheart by Alex White

This one is a wonderful podiobook. Steampunk, magic and the apocalypse all in one book! Woot! I listened to it a while back. The whole book is done so no waiting. It’s available on Podiobooks.com and at TheGearheart.com. The production was wonderful!

Quirk Classics

This is sort of a series. Classic stories such as Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility become Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters. Other books along the same lines include: Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, Queen Victoria: Demon Slayre, and Little Vampire Women

DAY 2

YAR! IT’S ALMOST CHRISTMAS!

Frankly pirates are just awesome. And they sing such catchy tunes.

While I was putting this one together I came across an awesome crochet pattern by skymagenta. It wasn’t quite Christmasy enough for the treasury but it was still too awesome not to share.

DAY 3

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM CHIRON BETA PRIME

Yep, you guessed it. Christmas robots!

DAY 4

I’LL BE AT HOGWARTS FOR CHRISTMAS

Yes, I went to the movie openning night. In fact I went to an openning night party at the theater and even bought my son and myself new wands.

Speaking of those wands, the maker is a wonderful local craftsman that used to have his both right next to us at the Ogden 25th Street Farmer’s Market. The last couple year’s he’s been up in the park so that he can have access to electricity during the market. He will actually make a custom wand right there in front of you on request. Check out his creations at www.MuggleWandMaker.com.

DAY 5

FESTIVE FUR, FLUFFY, AND FEATHERS

Yes I am one of those people that get my pets Christmas presents. We currently have three cats and they have a shared stocking which will be stuffed with some new toys and treats. Laugh away, but at least they will not be plotting my death for a little while, as cats tend to do.

DAY 6

COLORINGFUL CHRISTMAS

I don’t know what it is about crayons, but even now a new box of crayons still feels awesome to open. I love drawing up custom wing designs because I get to play with my markers.

It really sucks that I couldn’t refind it, but I had found a cuthulu coloring book on Etsy. So keep an eye out for that.

DAY 7

DECK THE DEATH STAR WITH BOWS OF HOLLY

Yes, the Star Wars Christmas special was absolutely awful. Doesn’t mean we can’t pretend it doesn’t exist and have a proper Star Wars like holiday. By the way, Han shot first.

DAY 8

A HOLIDAY THAT IS OUT OF THIS WORLD

Who says beings from other planets don’t celebrate Christmas. Okay so they probably don’t know about the whole Jesus thing… Yeah they’d probably point out that it was more likely he was born in the spring too. But who can resist the presents! Just as long as they don’t see the domination of our planet as their present we’re all good.

DAY 9

CHESTNUTS ROASTING OVER DRAGON FLAMES

So my little one got an early present last night. I finally finished this crochet dragon plushie I’ve been promising him for ages! I got the pattern from lucyravenscar (who also did the crochet Star Wars set shown above).

DAY 10

PRESENTS MADE BY HEART

They always say the best presents are those you’ve made yourself. Whoever “they” are apparently either just likes receiving homemade stuff or starts their present making in January. I on the other hand have pulled an epic fail in this regard and started yesterday. I’m making a bunch of crochet plushies that I got from the book Creepy Cute Crochet by Christen Haden. I’ve been thinking of getting a second copy for one of my cousins who has been trying to learn crochet, but it’s all that interested in scarves and blankets. This book has tones of simple and quick amigurumi creatures ranging from zombies to robots to Cuthulu (btw, take the wings from the cuthulu pattern, make them the same color as the monkey and you have a flying monkey!). The tutorials in the beginning are great for learning the basic stitches and because the plushies use both spiral rounds and closed rounds it really covers the full range of the basics. Plus if you by from NeedleNoodles.etsy.com (Christen’s etsy shop) you can buy a signed copy.

Yes, no DIY discussion is complete without a vid from ThreadBanger.com.  While SecretLifeofaBioNerd is a great hostess, I still miss the old cast, so this is one of the older episodes by Meg who did the Decor it Yourself feature. While this isn’t a Christmas episode, these would make really cute ornaments, bows on your gifts or as flower inspired snowflakes for the windows.

By the way, we are still accepting orders for our advent garlands and advent garland kits, and now also have a PDF instruction booklet available. These make great party favors as well as holiday countdowns, so please feel free to ask for custom tags. The garlands have the double advantage of being decorations as well as favors plus keeping the favors out of the way. We also have larger gift box versions available and stand alone favor boxes.

Another DIY item we have available is a printable Christmas Mystery kit. Leave clues for the hidden gifts, starting with a clue hung upon the tree in a cute envelope ornament.

As a Christmas treat we are also running a sale in our shop from now until New Years of 20% off all orders that use the code FROSTFAIRIES.  Also start following us on twitter (@barbedlotus), because with the new coupon code feature on Etsy we plan to run weekly sales on there as well as regular sales for the followers on this blog.

DAY 11

SPINNING A CHRISTMAS YARN

As I said I’m doing a LOT of crocheting for this holiday season. Also though, one of the top things on my own list is a set of handmade crochet hooks and a yarn bowl. I love the look of hand turned wooden hooks, and with three cats, a run away ball of yarn can turn into a really big mess.

Speaking of Christmas yarns you guys have to check out my Mema’s stockings! She is no longer accepting orders for this season because so many came in, but you will definitely want to order early for next year (orders for 2011 Christmas have already started coming in). Use the coupon code MEMAMADEME2 for 15% off orders.

DAY 12

CHRISTMAS SHOULD BE SWEET

Holidays mean one big thing to me. Caramels and gingerbread! What could possibly be better than both together? haveitconfections does this absolutely wonderful Gingerbread Caramels. We got a bunch of caramels from them last year and plan to use some of our Christmas money to buy some more after the holiday rush.

To check out the items in each set more closely simply click on the image. It will take you to the Etsy treasury where all the links to the items and their creators shops can be found. Enjoy.
