Let Them Eat Cake

Although there has never been any evidence that Marie Antoinette said “Let them eat cake” in response to the bread shortages caused by famine during her reign, the phrase and her image have been inseparable. The saying first appeared in The Confessions of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, which was written when Marie was about 13 and only referred to a great princess as saying it, so I think if it wasn’t made up it must have been a predecessor. Either way the style of Antoinette and her husband’s court still holds a fascination and is the definition of lavishness.
